I’m a mother - I have four, now grown up, children. I am a qualified midwife, with a first class honours degree in Midwifery Studies, and 18 years clinical experience – in hospitals, the community and in independent practice. I currently work as an independent midwife and as a doula (professional birth support). I am qualified in a range of maternity complementary therapies. I am also a qualified hypnotherapist.
I came to Hypnobirthing through my work as a midwife. I initially trained in the Mongan Method 5 years ago, and I have also trained in Katharine Hypnobirthing. I am currently employed on a part-time basis as an “hypnosis midwife” working on an NHS/University of Central Lancashire clinical trial of the use of self –hypnosis for childbirth.
As a midwife and doula I have supported many women giving birth in many different ways. Over the years I have seen many “hypnobirths”, and the difference is fundamental and difficult to explain. Words can hardly describe seeing a baby emerge gently in to the world, with mother and baby drug free and calm. Even if a birth does not quite go to plan, I have still seen Hypnobirthing make a huge difference – the woman and her partner are much more likely to remain calm and in control.
Hypnobirthing is a complete antenatal course and teaches you and your birth companion everything you need to know about birth. The full course is approximately 12 hours – this can be divided up in to 4 or 5 sessions (the way I prefer) – or over a weekend if time is tight. It uses guided relaxation, breathing, visualisation and massage techniques, to help women and their partners/birth companions release the negativity and fear with which our society views birth, and reconnect with the simplicity and calm of a baby’s natural entry in to the world.
Couples usually take the classes together – but it also works very well for women to do the course on their own or with a birth companion of their choice. On booking a course you will be sent a relaxation CD so you can start practising straight away. The course also includes a book and a folder of handouts to support the information and techniques covered in the sessions. I am available to answer questions and offer support by email/telephone. I also offer (for an extra charge and subject to availability) birth support as a doula for your labour and birth.
I have lots of positive birth stories and testimonials to share – here’s just one of them. The following is a short paragraph from Charlotte’s birth story – to read the full story – and many more – contact me.
I was so amazed that I was able to give birth using only hypnobirthing techniques…I can honestly say that not once did I think about needing any drugs for pain relief. The contractions (surges) were uncomfortable but not painful, and were very manageable. I was even asleep between contractions I was so relaxed, and that was at home as well as hospital.
I teach mainly teach hypnobirthing on a one–to-one, in the comfort of your own home (I am also willing to teach from my home if you would prefer that – and I would certainly charge less if you were to come to me). Call me and we’ll arrange a date/time that’s convenient for you.
Sometimes a couple join up with friends who are expecting at around the same time to do a group class in their home – again, this makes the course cheaper.
From Spring 2013 I plan to start teaching small group classes (3 couples at a time) from my home in Todmorden (easy parking, accessibly by public transport) on Sunday afternoons from 2-6 pm over 3 sessions. This is for people who would prefer a group class and fewer sessions.
I am always willing to be flexible about dates/days/times to fit in with your needs. My classes are reasonably priced (please see my website or contact me for current charges) – but if you feel you genuinely can’t afford my charges please contact me anyway to discuss payment in instalments and/or concessions as appropriate.
