I am currently a student midwife studying at the University of York. I have experienced hospital placements in Northallerton, Harrogate and York.  I have whitnessed and assisted many births and decided to train with KGHypnobirthing as there was a huge difference of labour experience with those who hypnobirthed and I wanted to know more on how I could support those women. I am very passionate about every birth and want to help empower women and partners at such an important time of their lives.

My hypnobirthing story began when I found out I was pregnant with my first baby; I was very excited but absolutely terrified of giving birth. I was convinced I would get my own 'badge of honour' horror story that I'd been subject to from my nearest and dearest on so many occasions. My fear of the induction process even saw me book a consultant appointment before 20 weeks to discuss the possibility of an elective C Section!

At this time I was personal training and one of my group clients, who was also pregnant (and only a few weeks ahead of me) casually announced that she was planning a homebirth and that, in fact, she had no fear whatsoever, she was nothing but excited. This was totally alien to me, I hadn't heard of anyone (in my close circle) approaching birth in this way. The magic words were 'Hypnobirthing' so immediately I began my research....

I found a teacher, signed up to group classes and bought every book available on Amazon. The course was amazing, it taught me so many incredible techniques to take myself into a deep state of relaxation. The knowledge I gained also alleviated my deepest fears; informing me of my choices. I no longer had to bury my head in the sand, My eyes were opened to everything birth related and I was now equipped with the tools to release fear and birth my baby calmly and with confidence.

Fast forward to the waiting game that is being 'overdue' 40 +12 to be precise. I had a fairly long and challenging labour but with the skill set I'd acquired I was able to meet each hurdle with a sense of calm and relaxation. I never once felt out of control, always safe and never doubted myself, my partner or my baby's ability to be born.

Betsy was born in June 2013 and I must've felt more at ease with my birthing ability because less than a year later I was pregnant again! This time with a son, James.

Hypnobirthing changed my whole approach to my pregnancy and indeed my two births. To trust in the bodies ability and to remain relaxed, focused and calm is an invaluable lesson; one which, I believe every pregnant woman should learn.

I'm a mum of 1 (soon to be 2!) and midwife working in the NHS.

I initially trained as a nurse in Australia and arrived in the UK to travel for a few years. That was over 10 years ago! I am also a military wife, and have worked in various NHS hospitals and have had many different experiences of birth. I'm currently very privelaged to work with an amazing team of midwives caring for women choosing to birth at home. I feel inspired by my colleagues and the women I'm honoured to care for every day. Not only by their strength and determination, but by their spirit.

When I first came across Hypnobirthing in my practice as a midwife I was in awe of the experience. I found that women using hypnobirthing techniques appeared calm, in control, and were also knowledgable about the birth process while acting very instinctively in labour. Birth partners were also engaged and very in-tune with the needs and wishes of their partner, which I found really enhanced the experience for them both. Hypnobirthing women tended to request pain relief medication less often, and many times had labours that progressed quickly.

I wanted to enhance my midwifery practice by becoming a hypnobirthing teacher, and i'm particularly interested in how hypnobirthing can help women who have previously experienced birth trauma or women with anxiety around birth. I have conducted research around the topic of midwifery care for women with perinatal mental health problems for my MSc, and i feel strongly about the benefits of hypnobirthing in relation to improving expereinces and outcomes.

Having had a peaceful, calm and beautiful natural birth with my second child I fully believe in the benefits of doing a KG Hypnobirthing course. As I had taught English for many years I thought, why not teach KG Hypnobirthing? It is truly a fantastic, full antenatal course and I am very excited to be able to offer classes both in Yorkshire and Turkey. I am also a doula and photographer.

I have worked for nearly 30 years in the NHS as an Occupational Therapist, specialising in Mental Health and I recognise the importance of how our emotions have an important role on our physical and emotional wellbeing. Additionally, I am a qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist having trained with the London School of Clinical Hypnosis and a member of the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis. I am very passionate about the benefits of hypnotherapy in feeling safe, relaxed, utilising our incredible unconscious minds in making our lives harmonious and secure. Having witnessed the many advantages of hypnotherapy, I trained with Katharine Graves in becoming a hypnobirthing teacher, enabling women to work with their bodies to give birth, feeling calm, confident and in control, enabling mother, baby and their partner to have an incredible experience of pregnancy and birth.

I myself have experienced two amazing hypnobirths: I have 3 children altogether – my first, Brad, born by emergency C-Section at 35 weeks due to pre- eclampsia. My second, Nevada was born using Hypnobirthing techniques. She was a VBAC (vaginal birth after Caesarean) my active labour was just 7.5 hours and she weighed 8lb 13oz. My third, Hamish was born just 2 hours and 20 minutes after my first surge (contraction) and he weighed in at a whopping 10lb and 7oz! – I am a size 8 and just 5’2″ tall – and I can honestly say I experienced no pain during his labour. I had no stitches and no perineal damage on either occasion and had very calm chilled out babies. My experiences completely inspired me to become a KG Hypnobirthing teacher – no one should have to experience the horror story births portrayed in the media or traumatic experiences so often recounted by mothers everywhere. I truly believe that everyone should be able to experience an amazing natural, empowering birth like I did. Birth is such a magical and amazing time; something we don’t get to experience very often in our lifetimes – it really is worth investing in Hypnobirthing to get the best birth possible for you. Go for it – Have the Birth of your Dreams!

I have been featured on 2 series of One Born Every Minute and I'm currently studying for a master of science in clinical research methods. This knowledge allows me to impart sound evidence into my classes and help undergo understand the research that's out there. I also lead antenatal classes privately and teach Pilates classes too. In fact, the combination of hypnobirthing, Pilates and antenatal classes is far greater than the sum of their parts. I am a mother of 2 children, a girl and a boy and live in the beautiful spa town of Harrogate

I have always had a passionate interest in empowering women to have a natural birth.

Over the years I have seen many changes in midwifery and the midwifery service. I have always kept up to date with new developments and embrace the philosophy that learning and development is an ongoing process.

Hypnobirthing was something I learnt as a result of my daughter being afraid of labour. She did a hypnobirthing course and had her first hypnobirthing baby in 2005. I was so impressed with the tecniques she employed in labour and the calm relaxed way she gave birth that I went on to train as a hypnobirthing practitioner. All my grandchildren (4) are hypnobirthing babies.

I have been teaching Hypnobirthing for over ten years and have enjoyed meeting a diverse mix of couples, most of whom have embraced hypnobirthing with enthusiasm and have gone on to have the birth they were looking for.
