What is Hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing uses relaxation and hypnotherapy techniques to help pregnant people achieve a calm & comfortable birth. It is a complete antenatal programme, giving you and your birth partner the knowledge and confidence to have a positive birth experience – no matter where or how your baby is born.  It can be used for all births.

Creating a Positive Birth Experience for all

Hypnobirthing is not just about breathing and relaxation techniques. Yes, it does include these, but it is much, much more than that.

You will learn how your body works during pregnancy and labour and have all the information you need to make informed decisions, that are best for you and your baby.

Over the last 10 years KGHypnobirthing has evolved from an alternative practice to the mainstream of prenatal care, we have rewritten the outdated stereotypes of child birth, they do not represent the experiences of hypnobirthing births. Everyone should practice hypnobirthing before giving birth, there is just no good reason not to!

How does hypnobirthing work?

  • Education:  You will learn about the physiology of birth and how the mind and body work together. With this knowledge you will understand the importance of relaxation to achieve a calm birth experience.

  • Release your fears:  However much you are looking forward to having your baby, it is hard to avoid negative birth stories. We give you the tools to release fear and build confidence – very effectively.

  • Practice:  The real work is done in the practice between your course and the birth – only 10 to 15 minutes a day. We give you all the simple yet practical tools for this daily practice which will change your mindset and develop a positive view of birth.

  • Your partner’s role: The support of a well-educated and informed birth partner makes a massive difference in the birthing room. KGH gives your partner the information to really make a difference to the birth experience.

  • Understanding your choices: There are SO many questions and choices and there are knock-on effects of each decision.  We talk you through the maternity system and explain all the options you have (including place of birth, interventions – including induction of labour, pain relief options and much more) You will be confident to make the right decision for you and your baby.  You will not be one of the many parents after they have given birth who say, “If only I had known ….. I would never have agreed.”

Frequently Asked Questions

When should you start hypnobirthing?

You can start your Hypnobirthing classes at any time – the sooner the better so you have more time to practice! Most woman and birthing people choose to start in their second trimester.  This gives plenty of time to practice and get into the right mindset.  I have also taught couples only days before they have given birth and it is still hugely beneficial at that time.  It is never too late!

What are the disadvantages of hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing has been criticised that it does not prepare women for births that do not go as planned.  This may be the situation in some hypnobirthing courses, but a KGH course is a complete antenatal course and will prepare you for all types of births, even if they are not what you planned.   We cover all types of births and go over all options, including c-sections births, so if for some reason you need to change your original birth plan, you are educated and prepared for any situation.

How do you perform hypnobirthing?

I have put this question in here as it is something that is asked regularly.  The simple answer is you do not have to ‘perform’.

You may have been put off by the ‘hypno’ word because you don’t want to be made to do something or look silly.  I can absolutely promise you it is nothing like that at all.  Stage hypnosis, which is entertainment, gives clinical hypnosis a bad name, which is sad as you are missing out on so many benefits that it can give you.

In hypnotherapy the practitioner uses positive language to help you let go of some of the negatives we have all acquired in life.  Sometimes these negatives get in the way of our enjoyment of life.  Certainly our society’s negative view of birth that you may have seen in the movies as being a scary and dramatic experience can stop you from truly letting go of your fears. This can lead to a traumatic birth and gets in the way of the wonderful and empowering experience that birth could and should be. Hypnobirthing can help change these views for you so you have an empowering and positive birth experience.

What is KG Hypnobirthing and how does it differ from other courses?

KG Hypnobirthing is the main provider of hypnobirthing courses in the UK and is expanding to many countries around the world.

Started in 2005, KGHypnobirthing founder Katharine Graves has helped bring this practise into the mainstream. As the author of the best selling; The Hypobirthing Book, we are very lucky that Katharine is available to teach parents in her busy schedule.

A key area for KGH is the focus on the going through the full course so you have the knowledge to empower you to enjoy a calm birth.  To make a real difference you need to follow this process and do the daily practice, there are too many courses that now cut the corners and are short changing woman.

KGH was pioneering in looking at the maternity care, breaking it down so you can understand the system you are in and how to make the right decisions for you.

“You may have the view that KGH consists of breathing, relaxations and visualisations. Yes it does include these, very effectively, but it is FAR more than that. These have been available to women for 70 years or more so, if that was all you needed, KGH would never have evolved. They are good, but they are certainly not enough on their own.

You will be surprised how logical and evidence based the course is – it is simple, logical and profound, very practical and very effective. . Join us! It works!”
