With over 35 years experience of working with pregnant women and their birth partners, I am a mother of 3 grown up children and have personal experience of self hypnosis during my own births (Hypnobirthing). I am a midwife. I have given birth at home and in hospital. In the 1980’s I was truly inspired by Dr Michel Odent and Ina May Gaskin. Together with my own experiences this led me to become a doula accredited by Michel Odent.

I later trained as a midwife. As a doula I worked in the North West of England. I have a strong passion to enable and support mothers (and partners) to have a positive birth experience.

In my role as a doula and midwife I have been privileged to have witnessed many calm and beautiful births unfold, many using self hypnosis or Hypnobirthing. I have been fortunate to have observed many water births, home births, and hospital births, including VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean).

For over 35 years I have supported and empowered women and their birth partners to make informed choices regarding their labour, birth, feeding and early parenting. I currently work within the NHS as a midwife in a midwifery led unit and in community.

I originally trained in The Mongan Method (USA  HypnoBirthing). I am now also practising The Katharine Graves (KGH) UK Hypnobirthing. I teach 4 classes of 12 hours (or slightly more). I understand that people have busy lives, so as far as classes go, I can be flexible to accommodate your individual needs, either in a small group or on a one to one basis, imcluding daytime, evening and weekend courses, or in any combination of the 4 sessions

In addition to my Hypnobirthing teaching role I work privately as a reflexologist, offering –

Pre conception and Fertility enhancement with Reflexology and Fertile Body Method of Hypnosis.

Reflexology in Pregnancy

Reflexology for all womens health and relaxation

Mineral Balanancing/nutritional support using Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA)

Birth trauma support, using self hypnosis, mind and body therapy

I offer private Antenatal Classes, preparing for labour and birth, helping you to do a birth “plan or preference sheet”, role of the birth partner and much more at dates and times to suit your busy lives.

In addition to this I offer sessions to prepare for when your baby is born, which include breastfeeding and the postnatal time ie life with your new born, early parenting, bonding, parenting roles, what is normal, changing nappies, bathing baby etc.

Please contact me to discuss your personal requirements and my availability.

Here are some testimonials/ birth stories below, also, please see my website for more current testimonials: https://janetnaylor.co.uk/testimonials/  Follow me on facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/hypnobirthingcumbriaandreflexologymidwife/also see http://www.janetnaylor.co.uk We heard about hypnobirthing from a friend and after a traumatic emergency caesarean section first time round, we wanted to do everything possible to try and achieve a natural birth (VBAC) second time around.
The course really helped to empower us and gave us the confidence to make informed choices about how we wanted the birth to be.

I began to have intermittent contractions on the Thursday evening but thought nothing of it and decided to put our son to bed as usual. An hour or so later I realised that I was definitely in labour and we decided it was time to go to hospital. Our daughter was born naturally a couple of hours later and I got the all important skin to skin contact with her (which I really missed first time due to the c-section).

During labour I was able to stay relaxed and felt confident that my body knew what to do. I got the birth I wanted second time around, and a lot of this was down to Janet’s classes giving me the confidence and belief that a VBAC was possible.Heather and Chris – VBAC – 2nd baby in Consultant led unit

After a previous traumatic birth I was supported by Janet with Hypnobirthing to be able to find confidence & courage to give birth to my third child naturally. Thank you so much Janet for all you have done for us. You have been so dilligent in keeping in contact and I will be forever grateful. You have taken time to reassure and instill a confidence and bravery in me that I never thought I would be able to manage. Thank you for everything! Gemma and husband, 3rd baby in Hospital.

As soon as I heard about hypnobirthing I wanted to do the course for my second baby. The course was fantastic, Janet is a brilliant teacher and she helped me understand why I had interventions during my first birth and how I could achieve the birth I wanted this time around.

My surges started on the Monday night but did not last very long, they started up again on Wednesday night, about 40seconds long and 20 minutes apart. As I was 41+3 and struggling with my pelvis Janet came and gave me a reflexology session to help me relax.

After this the surges got longer but when I got up Friday morning they stopped so I went for a walk and spent the afternoon in bed with my husband watching comedies and using tickling and nipple stimulation to get the oxytocin flowing! Lancaster wanted me in for monitoring as I was “over my due date” but we managed to keep putting them off as my labour had started. By 5pm Lancaster wanted me to be monitored but they were full so I went into Helme Chase at 7pm to see my midwife for monitoring. I was 4 cm so she decided to keep me in.

We turned the lights off, I put my hypnobirthing playlist on and took the clock off the wall. As the surges got more intense I decided to get in the pool, I didn’t feel like I was in there very long when I felt the baby coming. I breathed my girl out in 7 mins in the pool with gas and air, exactly how I had envisaged my labour. Our daughter is a calm hypnobaby, she latched on by herself soon after her birth and is very chilled out. I can’t recommend hypnobirthing and Janet enough, this birth was an amazing experience that every mother should have the opportunity to have.Vikki and Nick, 2nd baby, born in water at Helme Chase Birth centre

We did a hypnobirthing course with Janet and now have a couple of hypnobabies! We hit the local newspaper headlines in March 2015, being the first couple to give birth to twins physiologically in the birthing pool at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, here is the link:

https://www.thewestmorlandgazette.co.uk/news/11883016.Water_babies_make_history/

Abi added…”If my story inspired another person to have ago with Hypnobirthing to achieve a normal birth they choose I will be very happy . Janet Naylor was not mentioned in the article as our hypnobirthing tutor but she was fantastic and so supportive in helping us realise our choices for the birth we wanted” Abi and Paul, both twins born in water at RLI.

Janet’s hypnobirthing classes were invaluable in the run up to my first birth. They gave both me and my husband the techniques and tools to ensure that I was calm and confident in my body and natural ability.
My husband wasn’t convinced prior to starting the classes but attending the classes and practicing the techniques together meant that we were preparing as a team and gave us both a vital role before and during labour. After the birth of our baby boy, my husband was in absolute awe and said it was the most amazing experience he’d ever encountered.

What we found most useful was the information on pain relief, possible medical interventions and the physiology of labour – how labour progresses and how remaining calm is essential and integral to a positive and easy birth. Essentially, Janet gave us the information and confidence to make the right choices for us and our baby before and during labour.

The birth of our baby boy was perfect and something that we both look back on positively and in amazement. We were confident and calm enough not to go into hospital until I was well into labour and as a result, I gave birth to a 9lb 8oz baby with no pain relief, in the pool at Helme Chase and 7 hours after my first contraction. In fact, a few hours into my contractions, our Sainsburys delivery arrived and my husband merrily accepted it and put our shopping away! We needed food in the house for when we got home!!

Finally, a huge benefit of doing the group classes was the friends that we both made. We often socialise as couples and we meet as mummy’s and babies at least 2 or 3 times a week at various groups and lunches. I couldn’t be without them!

I would recommend Janet’s hypnobirthing classes absolutely!! “A” and “S” first baby born in water at midwifery led birthing unit.

I felt very anxious and worried about the labour during the beginning of my pregnancy. Janet and hypnobirthing were recommended to me at an antenatal appointment. I can honestly say it was the best thing I have ever done and I would not have been able to go through it without Janet and the techniques I learnt. The classes were fantastic, I would highly recommend them to anyone. Janet’s support throughout my pregnancy and at the birth has been priceless. After the classes and practising the techniques I began to look forward to the birth and felt empowered that my body can do this. I felt so positive and calm!

My waters broke at 2.50 am on the Saturday morning, I relaxed in bed with the CD on until the morning when I rang my midwife. I went in to the midwifery unit at 8 am, contractions had started and using the hypnobirthing breathing techniques I was able to remain calm and relaxed. As the contractions got stronger and closer together I found that using the visualisations we had talked about in the hypnobirthing classes really helped, I imagined a balloon inflating and then drifting off into the sky.

The second stage of labour I felt went really quickly for me. As the contractions became more intense I got in the birthing pool, continued with the breathing techniques and listened to the CDs. I visualised my daughter as a little girl, we were playing together in a field. It felt so real I could smell the flowers and feel the heat from the sun. Visualising breathing down to my baby also helped and thinking that each contraction is a step closer to seeing my baby. I had a little gas and air when the sensations in my back became really strong but I felt this was more of a hindrance and interfered with my breathing and visualisations therefore I ended up not needing to use it. I had always thought I would give birth to my baby in a birthing pool but in the end I opted for dry land. I felt in control, calm and relaxed. Without hypnobirthing I feel it would have been a very different story, I feel lucky and privileged to have experienced my ideal calm birth and would recommend hypnobirthing to anyone. It has been a wonderful journey and I cannot thank Janet enough for her support, we really don’t know what we would have done without her!L and D, first baby born in Birth Centre

Originally we were planning an induction of labour for a genuine medical concern. Due to a medical condition I was advised to have an epidural, which I had consented to but baby “E” had other plans! She was born completely naturally and drug free. Here is the story….

I accepted a hormone pessary at 2pm.

By 2am ( 12 hours later) I had dilated to 3cm, I was contracting every minute for 30 seconds. I was listening to my Hypnobirthing and my own playlist, breathing properly, visualising and coping really well – for the 12 hours.

My waters went on their own at 2.30am then contractions were much more intense, our baby was on her way, no time for monitoring, no time for epidural, no time for even a canula or anything – the baby’s head was out, labour recorded as 50 minutes but in reality it was more like 23 minutes . “E” is breast feeding like a pro – she rooted 10 minutes after birth and lifted her head straight away. Skin to skin for 45 minutes, delayed cord clamping as requested.

Hypnobirthing helped me stay calm and fearless about the lead up to the big day itself which was mostly the reason I wanted to come to the classes – to feel empowered and positive about birth itself, and when I was contracting for the 12 hours from the pessary I stayed calm, focused, confident and in ‘control’.Second time parents in Consultant Unit “R” and “M”

“Waters broke at 10.30 a.m, went to the unit, baby born at 2pm, Amazing! Thank u for support x” J”and “C” 3rd baby born in Birth Centre – short text message.

Janet has been a fundamental part of our daughters life – starting at the beginning with help through Refelxology to help with fertility, to being an excellent guide thorough the process and theories of hypnobirthing and finally and acting as our incredible Doula. Having Janet as our Doula was an amazing experience especially with the trust we had built up- how do women cope without a Janet??? Throughout, Janet has been a constant help & guide which we will be forever grateful. We can not recommend Janet and her services highly enough !Sandy and Nev – First baby, Consultant led unit (using Reflexology and Hypnobirthing)

Thank you so much for all your help and support over the past few months – it made a huge difference to us and really helped us achieve the best birth for us. I wanted to share with you some of the details of the birth, and where we found Hypnobirthing helpful, so you can share with other parents.

I’m happy for you to share our experience with other couples on your course, as we feel that we had a very positive experience, even though we didn’t have the natural birth we had wanted. We considered our options and agreed that we were happy to start the induction process at “term plus 10”. The hospital was very busy that day, so we didn’t get to see a consultant until late in the afternoon. Monitoring showed that the baby was happy and healthy, my health was good, and we weren’t in any rush so we decided to leave hospital that afternoon, rather than start on induction. Both D and I found the techniques helpful. I was able to tell him what I needed and breathing techniques really helped me manage the surges. The hospital had moved us to a private room, so we could keep the lights low, listen to music and relaxation tracks in our own space. This was much more conducive to Hypnobirthing than being on the shared ward.

Following several attempts with the pessary over several days and not in labour, we were offered the syntocinon drip. Hypnobirthing and the preparation we had done for the birth helped give us the confidence to say no to this and to request a c-section.

I was quite apprehensive about the section, and we used relaxation techniques throughout the day to help us prepare for it. As it was planned, we were able to make people aware of our preferences for optimal cord clamping, immediate skin to skin contact, having our own music playing in the theatre and for my partner to be with me at all times. This took a bit of negotiation, but the team were very accommodating –we were initially told that immediate skin to skin wasn’t possible as I would have monitors on me, but the anaesthetist agreed to put the electrodes on my back, rather than my front, to enable skin to skin. Standard protocol is for the father to wait outside until the spinal has been administered, but again, the hospital were very accommodating and agreed that he could be there for the procedure. I found this hugely beneficial as he was able to use relaxation techniques whilst the spinal was being done.

Although it was a much more medicalised process than we were hoping for, our birth experience was extremely positive. Hypnobirthing and the preparation we did helped us make informed decisions about interventions and treatment which helped us feel in control, even in a very medicalised environment. The techniques we had practised helped us stay calm and gave me the confidence to trust my instincts. The hospital was very respectful of our wishes at all times. The midwives were interested in Hypnobirthing and were very considerate in creating an environment that was conducive to Hypnobirthing techniques. The support and preparation we received from Janet, was invaluable in helping us achieve the best birth for us. “J” and “D” first baby, elective C/S  at Consultant unit using Hypnobirthing

Before getting pregnant I always thought I would be anxious and worried about the labour throughout the whole pregnancy. After researching hypnobirthing techniques and reading other testimonies we decided to complete Janet’s course. Janet was great and taught me to adopt a positive attitude towards birth and ignore everyone’s horror stories (people seem to like to tell you the worst!) It also taught me that you actually have a lot of choices that Id never realised before, and it gave us the confidence to choose a home birth. With the help of Janet we managed to achieve the home birth we wanted. I didn’t feel like I needed pain relief, and I was even told on several occasions that I didn’t look or sound like I was in established labour so I couldn’t be that far along if having contractions at all. I would definitely recommend hypnobirthing and a home birth, I was relaxed and calm throughout and had a great positive birth experience…Stef and Jake, first baby born at home in water in the living room.

The Hypnobirthing course really helped us develop a calm approach to pregnancy and birth. Janet was a great teacher, offering practical and emotional support and helping us feel confident and well-prepared for the amazing event that is birth. As a result, we both felt in control and empowered during the birth. We had a water birth at home and the only pain relief used was a TENS machine. Hypnobirthing enabled me to feel relaxed and gave me confidence that my body and my baby would work together for a healthy, natural and calm birth. We would not hesitate in recommending hypnobirthing, water births and home births to anyone wanting a natural birth experience and most of all would recommend Janet and her services to anyone who is pregnant! Her expertise, experience and lovely manner made a huge difference to us when welcoming our little boy into the world. I didn’t have any stitches either- my body coped really well- and recovered remarkably quickly….Amanda and Jamie , first baby, born at home in water.

Our lovely Ester was born at home on Sat 8th Nov by the wonderful Janet Naylor with a helping hand from her dad Graham! We can’t recommend Janet’s course enough :-) Practising hypnobirthing during our pregnancy gave us the knowledge & confidence to trust the birthing process, understand how to access natural hormones and the ability to challenge policies, procedures & stereotypes regarding our strange cultural tendency to associate ‘trauma’ with birth. The course & the practising also helped us enjoy pregnancy & look forward to the birth instead of being anxious about it AND it gave Graham a really active role & was described as a ‘midwife in the making’ afterwards! Janet went out of her way to support us, answering all our questions and providing additional info / research on loads of relevant topics. So in short…. Accessing Janet’s experience & wisdom was the best investment we have made for Ester :-) She is a chilled out baby, we are more confident parents & (in case it’s not obvious) total hypno/positive birth advocates!Helen, first time mother

Here’s one from Graham too….. I wasn’t sure what to expect when we signed up for Janets course because I hadn’t heard of hypnobirthing and was a bit cynical… However after the first session with the brilliantly down to earth, enthusiastic and informative Janet I knew we had made the right choice. As a dad I felt that the course combined with Janet’s knowledge & experience as a midwife provided me with the tools & knowledge to have a really active & supportive role during both the pregnancy and birth rather than feeling like a spare part! Without the course we would have been more stressed and certainly less confident in planning a home birth. I highly recommend the course and hope other couples also experience the calm & natural birth we did because it was amazing!…  Helen & Graham, first baby born at home.

We worked with Janet 1:1 to prepare us for birth using Hypnobirthing. Janet is very personable and her passion for midwifery and experience beams through in her work. Janet seems to always go the extra mile with her services and time and makes you feel at ease throughout.

We were anxious about birth and didn’t feel we had the information and skills needed to tackle it head on. Hypnobirthing offers a priceless education on all birthing matters and gave us additional tools to use within labour as a couple. My birth followed the ‘plan’ and I recovered quickly and I believe my preparations helped this. Birth was the hardest thing I have ever done! Without Janet it would of been even harder! Thank you!… Laura and Jay, first time parents, baby born in Birth Centre.

After a traumatic birth with our first son, we were really worried about doing it all again so we looked into hypno birthing. We wanted to feel in control this time and for Matty to feel more involved as he felt helpless last time which was traumatic for him too. The hypno birthing course taught us to look at everything more positively, learn to relax and most importantly breathe! This really helped in labour to make surges less intense. We found that learning about how the muscles worked helped with visualisations and stopped me fighting surges and to work with them instead. We went into the birth more confidently as we felt the course had given us knowledge, knowing ours rights gave us the power and control we wanted this time. We had a quick relaxed birth needing no drugs or stitches; we also delivered the placenta naturally. This meant I was bright and alert to welcome our son into the world and he was born calm and happy…Louise and Matty, 2nd baby born in Birth Centre.

“Breathing my baby so gently into our world was such a beautiful, calm and spiritual experience. A wonderful day putting all I learned with Janet into practice… An unforgettable memory.. With me forever… Thank you” …from Amanda Ann, a home birth, 3rd baby, aged 44 years…

“Hypnobirthing empowered me to have the calm, positive and beautiful birth experience I planned for.  It was life changing for me and my partner. It takes a lot of hard work and preparation (not simply reading it from a book or listening to the CD a few times, as some people may think).  But I cannot emphasise enough how much it is worth it.” following a lovely water birth in midwifery led unit…..Jodie, first baby.

“Although I originally wanted a homebirth…I had a genuine reason to be in hospital, it was first thought that I needed a planned c/section but I ended up with a beautiful normal birth…Hypnobirthing was very empowering and helped me and my husband negotiate and get the lovely calm birth experience that we wanted” Liz, hospital birth, first baby.

‘”I had a successful VBAC , it was a calm, beautiful experience that was so empowering . I did not really believe that I could do this , but with Janet’s help this was an amazing experience that I would wish for , for my daughter  in the future and any mother to be”  Rosie from Rochdale.

“Without Hypnobirthing, we undoubtedly, would never have had our perfect birth…” Sarah, 2nd baby, home waterbirth”

“Hypnobirth classes are solely responsible for enabling us to achieve our perfect birth; intervention free, drug free and at home. The experience was amazing and beautiful for all three of us!” Val, first time mother, water birth at home.

“Hypnobirthing definitely made me feel more calm and confident in pregnancy and leading up to the birth. I felt more empowered and in control. Although my labour didn’t go as I intended it to I really used the breathing techniques to help deliver my baby naturally”. Kerry, 1st time mother in hospital.

“It made me aware of how important a calm environment during labour is and it gave me the confidence to take control during it and help support my wife effectively”. Michael, first time father.  ”I used various Hypnobirthing techniques such as: controlled breathing, relaxation CD’s & birth music, creating visualisations to take my mind to a place of calm in labour. All of these techniques led me to having a natural birth, without any intervention or pain relief. I would highly recommend Hypnobirthing to any pregnant woman who wants a positive birth experience! “Jessica Moser MFHT. 2nd baby, midwifery led unit, water birth. ” I would certainly recommend hypnobirthing to enjoy giving birth naturally. Thanks to Janet’s refresher course with our second child we had a quick drug free relaxing labour xxxx” Alison – water birth in Consultant led unit.

“HypnoBirthing was a godsend for me during my labour. The breathing techniques helped not only with the feelings of the surges, but kept me calm during other procedures. Although it became a long labour and birth resulting in a C section, I managed to get through much of it with HypnoBirthing alone before we had to rely on medical intervention. Even though things did not go according to our preferences,  the HypnoBirthing allowed me to stay calm. It was invaluable and I would have been lost without it.” L and S, first baby, in Consultant led unit.

“Hypno birthing helped me to understand my body, learn how to breathe at each stage and the ability to practice relaxation. Enabling me to put it into practice during labour and massively reduce any fear”. L -first time mother.

“As a birthing partner, Hypnobirthing sessions gave me information and facts I needed to understand the birth process to then be able to support my wife and making it an amazing experience”.M, first time father.

“Hypnobirthing was amazing for me. I had a real active role in our daughter’s birth, even before birth, with practice. I was able to support and calm my partner throughout, leading to a natural birth. Janet was great at enabling us to have ways of dealing with the surprises the birth journey had, whilst  staying relaxed and focused.” Andy, birth partner,  hospital birth.

“We got a lot out of doing the hypnobirthing with Janet and it made us feel as prepared as we could feel before the birth of Evie May. The birth itself didn’t go according to our plan, as we didn’t give birth in our preferred place due to local policies and criteria yet we managed to stay calm and use the breathing and techniques we had learned to get through it. My birth partner was wonderful and managed to negotiate with midwifery staff to have our birth preferences met despite some of them being “outside” hospital guidelines, which affected our birth experience positively.

I wouldn’t have felt able to be so calm if we hadn’t practised so much beforehand. Evie May was born naturally with no pain relief (except paracetamol !) and has been alert from the beginning. She is a calm baby and we attribute a lot of this to the hypnobirthing experience and the fact that we have remained calm throughout. Thanks Janet for all of your help and support – we would recommend you to anyone who was considering hypnobirthing.” Laura, first baby born in hospital.

“We attended Hypnobirthing classes with Janet and were so glad we did. The techniques we learnt helped us in so many ways both during my pregnancy (helping me to stay relaxed) and when it came to the labour and birth. I had a long labour (over three days) with a lot of the intense sensations occurring in my back, due to my baby’s position. We spent most of this time at home and I can honestly say that the Hypnobirthing techniques were my saviour during this period! I used the breathing techniques consistently and my husband read some of the scripts. When we got to the Birth Centre, I continued to use the techniques (including playing the music) whilst in the birthing pool. I managed to get to 9.5cm dilated with no analgesia! My body was so tired by then however and we agreed to a transfer to hospital where my daughter was delivered by forceps. I agreed to gas and air and Meptid at this point, and the Hypnobirthing preparation I had done in advance allowed me to remain calm about what was happening and to stay in the present moment. In the Hypnobirth classes we had time to consider our birth preferences in detail which was invaluable. My husband was able to express our wishes confidently (despite the special circumstances that arose) ensuring that most of them could be met. We had skin-to-skin contact, delayed cord clamping, and an hour with baby before she was weighed etc. – all things which may not have happened automatically due to the perceived time pressures towards the end.  However we were also confident when we agreed to any suggested changes to our preferences, because we had considered each issues in advance and understood why changes were needed in our situation.

I am astounded at what I am capable of and how empowered I felt throughout the labour and birth process. However it was definitely a team effort between me, my husband and our daughter. When she was born, she was so relaxed and alert despite the forceps delivery and remains a chilled out little lady (most of the time!)

Janet was so supportive throughout the whole process and definitely went the ‘extra mile’ to ensure that we were confident with the techniques and in our ability to remain calm and empowered both during pregnancy and the birth. Thank you Janet! “ Ginny – 1st baby

“I was initially a little sceptical about the group, but I shouldn’t have been. Hypnobirthing was a great opportunity to think positively about the whole process of a natural labour and birth. When the time came we were fully prepared and even though things didn’t go exactly as we’d envisaged, hypnobirthing gave us the tools to deal with any bumps along the way by staying relaxed and calm throughout (using our hypnobirthing exercises), working as a team and staying focussed on what was important, such as choosing to have delayed cord clamping and skin-to-skin contact with mum straight away. Janet was a fantastic, knowledgeable mentor and always very welcoming. I would recommend her classes to any prospective parents.” Graham, first time dad.

“We will definitely be recommending this to friends and family in the future.” M and L
