Older mothers and why they should not be labelled 'High Risk'
If you look at the overall figures for older women, the risks are slightly higher, however, if you remove from those figures the women who have a condition of pregnancy, such as pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, then there is very little different from an older mother and a younger mother. When we get to 40 we have had 20 more years to abuse our bodies from when we were 20 and therefore these conditions are slightly more likely for older mothers.
However, the health of the women is far more important than the age. If a women is healthy, there is very little difference between a 20 year old and a 40 year old.
