Katharine Talks to Dan Wootton on TalkRadio About Older Mothers

Older Mothers – Should They Be Labelled High Risk?

Older mothers are often told they will be induced at 39 weeks as they are classed as ‘high risk’. As a result, their treatment tends to be different, interventions are often used sooner, and this negative bias can have a the knock-on effects on their birth outcomes.

Being classed as ‘high risk’, is frightening for both the mothers and their caregivers. Decision are then made under this ‘cloud’ of fear.

What About The Facts

This is something we look at in great detail on a KGHypnobirthing Course. We encourage everyone to research, understand the facts, ask the right questions and then make the best decisions for them based on their own unique circumstances, rather than making decisions in a fearful environment often with mis-information.

So are ‘older’ mothers at a higher risk?

If you look at the overall figures for older women, the risks are slightly higher, however, if you remove from those figures the women who have a condition of pregnancy, such as pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, then there is very little difference for an older mother and a younger mother.

When we get to 40 we have had 20 more years to abuse our bodies from when we were 20 and therefore these conditions of pregnancy are slightly more likely for older mothers.

However, the health of the women is far more important than the age. If a women is healthy, there is very little difference between a 20 year old and a 40 year old.

  • So do your research
  • Make sure you have the facts
  • Ask the right questions
  • Which will help you make the right decisions for you and for your baby

All the things you will learn on a KGHypnobirthing course!
