‘Is there any point in men being present at the birth?’

I do hope you managed to listen to the Mark Forrest BBC Local Radio show last night

We were discussing whether fathers should be present at the birth of their child. It was lovely to hear Michel Odent speaking on the subject before me, as well as all the wonderful fathers and mothers who called in to talk about this.

There were plenty of different and interesting views on the subject which was refreshing, although Michel and I agreed that if a father’s presence is likely to cause stress and anxiety in the mother, then it’s best he’s not in the room with her. However, if he has been supportive all the way through the pregnancy, particularly with hypnobirthing, then I do think he should be there, because in many cases the mother will say afterwards that she couldn’t have done it without him.
